Volunteers Enhance Parade of Orchids

City News Flash Posted on April 15, 2024

The Parade of Orchids got a boost Friday when 18 volunteers gathered at Stunson Nature Trail, located at 1701 NW 38 Street, and helped city staff add more than 300 new plants, including night fragrant orchids and butterfly orchids, on-site. Volunteers included representatives from the Urban Farming Institute, the City’s Beautification Advisory Board, the Oakland Park Volunteer Corps, and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Lowe's generously provided supplies and planting materials.

The Stunson Nature Trail and native wetlands preserve, named in honor of Oakland Park’s late City Manager, John Stunson, opened in 2018. The City worked together with the Royal Palm neighborhood and the Broward County School Board to preserve the five-acre parcel of natural wetlands habitat for a nature trail. The Parade of Orchids was created at the Stunson Nature Trail in July 2020 to show appreciation for those who served the community during the pandemic.

Charitable contributions from donors and many hours of service from volunteers and staff are helping the City keep Stunson’s legacy alive by maintaining this beautiful nature trail. Please visit the City website to learn more, and click here to donate to the Parade of Orchids.
