Exciting Upgrades Coming to J. Dewey Hawkins Landing!

City News Flash Posted on July 21, 2025

Big improvements are on the way for J. Dewey Hawkins Landing as the City of Oakland Park moves forward with plans to enhance this cherished waterfront spot. These efforts will ensure it remains a favorite destination for boaters, kayakers, and outdoor enthusiasts for years to come.

Boat Ramp and Dock Improvements

The dock will be repaired and revitalized to ensure it stays a safe, functional, and welcoming space. While evaluating options for the boat ramp, the City carefully considered removing it. However, staff determined that preserving and enhancing the boat ramp and modifying it is the best choice for the community. Removing the structure would incur significant costs and could unintentionally create safety risks by allowing access to the seawall currently being stabilized. By keeping the dock in place and investing in key upgrades, we’re prioritizing safety, functionality, and long-term sustainability.

Planned Enhancements Include:

✅ Boat Ramp – Making it easier and safer for boaters to access the water.
✅ Seawall & Bulkhead – Strengthening and preserving the shoreline for years to come.
✅ Dock Structures – Restoring and improving docking options for greater convenience.
✅ Kayak Launch – Creating a safer, smoother launch experience for paddlers.

 Funding Progress

We’re excited to share that the City has secured $421,517 in grant funding to date, including:

  • $300,000 from the Land and Water Conservation Fund
  • $60,000 from the Coastal Partnership Initiative
  • Up to $200,000 from the Florida Boating Improvement Program (awarded July 2nd)

In addition, we also applied for a grant from the Florida Inland Navigation District’s Waterway Assistance Program, requesting $300,000 to support these upgrades.

What’s Next?

Design and permitting for the project are already complete, and construction will move forward once final grant funding is secured. The project timeline will be finalized as soon as all awards are confirmed. We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we work to enhance this vital recreational asset. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to make progress on this exciting project!
