City News Flash Posted on March 24, 2025

The City of Oakland Park has once again been recognized for preparing high-quality budget documents receiving the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its fiscal year 2025 budget. This marks the 21st consecutive year the City has earned this prestigious award.

The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is a notable achievement that highlights Oakland Park’s dedication to upholding the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The award is given to municipalities that meet rigorous national standards, ensuring that their budgets serve as effective policy documents, financial plan, operations guide, and communication tool. This recognition underscores the City Commission and staff’s commitment to maintaining transparency, sound financial practices, and continuous improvement in budgeting.

Additionally, this year, the City of Oakland Park received two (2) special recognitions for its exceptional performance in key budgetary categories such as: (1) Long-range Operating Financial Plans and (2) Capital Program. Special recognition is awarded when all three reviewers give the highest possible score in particular categories. This honor further exemplifies the City's strong financial planning and commitment to excellence.

Achieving this award for over 20 consecutive years is a testament to the city’s dedication to responsible financial stewardship and transparency. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every dollar is spent wisely and that our budgeting process supports our community's long-term success and growth.

Established in 1906, the GFOA is a professional organization dedicated to advancing public finance practices. With over 23,000 active members, the GFOA has played a vital role in promoting excellence in budgeting through its Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program, which began in 1984.

In line with its reputation for careful financial management, Oakland Park adopted a reduced millage rate for the 2025 fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025.

This award and special recognition reflect the City’s dedication to providing clear, accessible financial information that serves residents and stakeholders alike and ensures a solid foundation for Oakland Park’s future.
