Sustainability & Resilience
Environmental conditions and natural disasters, including flooding, sea level rise, and hurricanes, can impact homes, businesses, infrastructure, and landscaping. By incorporating sustainable and resilient principles into planning, design, construction, and management, communities can better protect people, property, and natural resources while supporting long term well being.
The City is taking proactive steps to adapt to climate change, reduce environmental impacts, and build a more sustainable and resilient future. Sustainability and resilience are priorities that guide decision making across every department, from infrastructure and public works to parks, community services, and beyond. The City is a member of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, is recognized as a National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat, and has been a Tree City USA community for 29 years.
Climate action efforts include adopting a Joint Climate Action Plan with Wilton Manors in 2019 and completing a five year update in 2025. The City is also an active member of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, working with local governments across the region to address shared climate risks.
In addition, a vulnerability assessment has been conducted to evaluate risks from sea level rise and flooding. A second assessment is now in its final phase, incorporating updated state requirements and the City’s Second Century Assets. This work will guide future investments and resilience strategies and is expected to be completed in summer 2026.
