  1. Great Moves: Learning Chess Through History!

    Youth and adults ages 5th grade and up. Registration required. National Scholastic Chess Foundation (NSCF) Instructor Chris Goldthorpe, will present a 10-week class featuring fun games, competitive play, lectures, and chess problem-solving strategies. The class is open to all students and interested adults. There is no pre-requisite other than a reading level of 5th grade and above. The class is for beginner through intermediate level players. "Great Moves" traces the development of chess from its origins in ancient India and takes the student on a far-ranging journey through the palaces of medieval and Renaissance Europe to the cafes of the Enlightenment and the dawn of the Industrial Age, with a focus on the leading personalities of the royal game and on their contributions to the understanding of it. These classes are made available through the generous support of the Friends of Ethel M. Gordon Oakland Park Library group.
