  1. Great Moves: Learning Chess Through History!

    March 5, 2019, 5:30 PM - May 14, 2019, 7:30 PM @ Ethel M. Gordon Oakland Park Library

    Youth and adults ages 5th grade and up. Registration required. National Scholastic Chess Foundation (NSCF) Instructor Chris Goldthorpe, will present a 10-week class featuring fun games, competitive play, lectures, and chess problem-solving strategies. The class is open to all students and interested adults. There is no pre-requisite other than a reading level of 5th grade and above. The class is for beginner through intermediate level players. "Great Moves" traces the development of chess from its origins in ancient India and takes the student on a far-ranging journey through the palaces of medieval and Renaissance Europe to the cafes of the Enlightenment and the dawn of the Industrial Age, with a focus on the leading personalities of the royal game and on their contributions to the understanding of it. These classes are made available through the generous support of the Friends of Ethel M. Gordon Oakland Park Library group.

  2. Join Us for the Oscars: Favorite Songs from the Movies

    Come and enjoy a great family concert! The Broward Women’s Choral Group’s 2019 spring season presents “Join Us for the Oscars: Favorite Songs from the Movies.” From “Cheek to Cheek” from the movie Top Hat in 1935 to “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story 2 in 1999. The group has a delightful selection of popular movie songs that won Oscars, Grammy's or Golden Globes. You’ll probably remember Barbara Streisand singing “Evergreen” from the 1976 remake of A Star is Born. They will perform award-winning songs from Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer and even the Muppets. You’ll be singing along to your favorite winning songs from the movies.

    The Friends of the Oakland Park Library invite everyone to shop for literary bargains at their “Used Book Sale” Friday, April 26 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturday, April 27 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) in the Marie Wright Room of the Ethel M. Gordon Oakland Park Library at 1298 NE 37 Street. A large volume of titles representing a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction are available in this clearance sale, as well as books on CD, music CD’s and DVD movies. Proceeds from the book sale are used to help fund Oakland Park Library programs and improvements.   1. Easter Egg Hunt at Royal Palm Park

    April 20, 2019, 9:45 AM - 11:00 PM @ Royal Palm Pavilion South

    On Saturday, April 20, 2019, the Oakland Park Firefighters’ Benevolent Association, will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt free to the public at Royal Palm Park located at 1701 NW 38th Street in Oakland Park. At approximately 9:45 a.m., the Easter Bunny will arrive at the park in the fire engine to start the Easter Egg Hunt at 10:00 a.m. Children ages 12 and younger are invited to attend and should bring their own basket or bag to hold the eggs. For more than 26 years, the Oakland Park Firefighters’ Benevolent Association has hosted the Easter Egg Hunt free of charge to children living in Oakland Park.
